Comment 18 stimmt so nicht. Comment Dude: Na, dann ;-. Comment the Herbie is definitely a beatle, not a bug! I am referring to the prototype Volkswagen, and that is a beetle. But in common parlance, this car was universally referred to as a "Bug". Importantly, it was the consuming public, and not VW, that originated this usage. Comment "The consuming public" in the States, I suppose.
Comment Bug oder beetle? Es kann nur einen geben: Bond Bug. Both terms exist and were eventually used by VW themselves for a number of special edition beetles after being used colloquially by the public for a few decades beforehand. Prior to this, official VW models names were simply based on numbers, , L, , , , etc.
However, I'm sure many people who are not native Brits do use 'bug'. That was a pop group! Slightly off-topic but related, UK slang does have Vee-dub, but this is usually used to refer to an original Beetle or one of the air cooled camper vans. I don't think many people would say Vee-dub when talking about a modern Volkswagen. I didn't at first realise what sort of car he was talking about.
